CAPTURING NON-FMJ BULLETS FOR FORENSIC COMPARATIVE EXAMINATION—EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL STUDY

D. Pacek, P. Badurowicz, R. Gieleta

Abstract

In the paper the research works on elaboration of novel solution for stopping without deformation wide range of non-Full Metal Jacket bullets is presented. The results which prove its effectiveness were shown. The paper describes the experimental tests and the numerical simulations of bullet impact into water, with nominal velocity. The critical value of impact velocity Vcr (which do not cause deformation of bullet) was found numerically. The composite reducing bullet velocity to Vcr was prepared and tested. With the use of the composite and plasticine a monolithic hollow point 9 mm GECO Action Extreme bullet was decelerated and slowly stopped in such a manner which not to cause bullet deformation. Proposed method could therefore be used to capture non Full Metal Jacket bullets in a form allowing determination whether the given weapon e.g. was used to fire a projectile found at the crime scene.
