SHAPED CHARGE FIRING THROUGH FUEL TANK WITHIN A GENERIC VEHICLE VOLUME
Abstract
Attack of a shaped charge jet (SCJ) against a vehicle may result in perforation of the fuel tank, which subsequently can lead to the spreading of fuel inside the vehicle and an increased risk of fire. To determine the probability of ignition and the effect on the passengers, test where conducted, where an SCJ was fired through a fuel tank inside a pressure vessel. Through highspeed videos, temperature and pressure measurements it was concluded that there is a high probability that the fuel will ignite if an SCJ penetrates the fuel tank.
